#HappinessToday day 5

What Makes You Happy? I have been reflecting and writing each morning on this topic. Day 1 was a breeze, Day 2 was fun, Day 3 was a challenge, and Day 4 was a little surprise.

Day 5, yesterday, was Sunday. We did something together as a family for the first time that I thought was simple yet really fun.

We went for a family bike ride! First time since living in CA that ALL of our bike tires were full and both of my children came and did great!

My husband and son pretended they were freestylers while my daughter and I rode behind laughing at them and talking to each other.

It was the first time I had seen my children on bikes, on a bike path, with us, really going for a long ride.

It struck me how fast they are growing up. It felt like just yesterday I had them in the tow-behind attached to the back of my bike riding along the MA/RI coastline bike path. And today they are riding their own bikes, my son training wheel-less and my daughter deciding that next weekend her training wheels are coming off. Wow.

Then it struck me how lucky I am. I have always stayed at home with them (or more to the point, I have always worked for my children as staying in the house with them all day is rough so I usually take them out!!). And I had made it! My daughter started kindergarten earlier this Sept. and I realized that I had made it through what a lot of people call the most difficult years fairly unscathed. My children are happy (for the most part!), healthy and pretty well-rounded and we are entering that magical time where the kids are a little more independent, are forming their own thoughts and opinions and they are really interested in the things we do.

Don’t get me wrong, there were lots (seriously, a lot) of days where I wanted to pull my hair out but looking back, they really are good kids. I did not have a lot of the challenges that I see many other parents go through. And for that I am fortunate.

I’m not sure if it was the bike ride itself or the realization that I had passed one phase of my (and my children’s) life with flying colors for another, but I felt happiness.

Enough happiness that I did not mind fixing dinner, then cleaning it up and getting the kids in bed. I kind of floated through it!

What made you happy?
