Family Travel: 5 Pro travel safety tips

Safety is always a top priority when I’m traveling, and even more so when my littles are along. Anything can happen, which most of the time is the beauty of it. But sometimes… not so much.

The good news is that there are things you can do to prevent many disasters from even happening in the first place. I’ve asked around, I’ve tried and tested and put together a list of my top 5 Pro Travel Safety Tips. These simple travel safety tips will help set your mind at ease giving you a trip filled with nothing but good memories!

5 Pro Travel Safety Tips

  1. Make and bring copies of your passport and any import documents needed and leave in the hotel secure safe. Do some research on the area to know what sort of identification you need to have on-hand. You shouldn’t need to carry your passport around for your day excursions and losing them can be a nightmare. I have color copies on hand of our passports in addition to carrying them, copies go in my bags, the real deal goes in the safe. Any medical info, credit card help info, other travel documents, emergency numbers (911 does not work outside of this country lol) reservation numbers (both confirmation numbers and who to call for help numbers) and anything else important should be copied and kept in a safe place where you can easily access them in an emergency.
  2. Be Social Media Savvy. I know we all love to share our photos on social media that minute, but think about this. Posting in real time 1. Let’s people know your home is empty and 2. Let’s people know where you are and that you are a tourist which could possibly lead to trouble. It is a good idea to post on at least a one-day delay or save them until you are home and post away at your leisure.
  3. Keep in touch with someone at home. Let a friend, parent or sibling know where you will be, how long and what you will be up to. Periodically keep in touch with them when you are there. Maybe even create a safe word so they know it is you who is communicating with them beyond a shadow of a doubt. People can be tricky, and stories like you have been arrested and need money or have had an accident and need money happen all the time. Family Travel: 5 Pro Travel Safety Tips
  4. Register with the STEP program. STEP means Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, a free service from our government allowing travelers to register their trip with the local consulate to be given notice of any threatening situations that may arise. This program takes travel safety to a new level! You can find it here STEP.
  5. Review the emergency evacuation plan everywhere you stay. I know you are more excited to check out the pool… but take a sec to acclimate yourself and figure the best way out in an emergency, it just might save your life.

With just a little bit of extra effort and thought, you can ensure that your trip will be as smooth, relaxing and rejuvenating as possible!
