Tonight marks a special phenomenon – the first Supermoon in over 68 years. It will not occur again until 2034, so make sure you get outside tonight or early in the morning to check it out.

What is a Supermoon?

A Supermoon is when the moon is 90% closer in orbit to the Earth, about 30,000 miles closer to the Earth. At the same time, the Earth, Sun and Moon all line up as the moon continues it’s orbit around Earth. The Earth is in the middle with the Sun and Moon directly lined up on opposite sides.

The result of these two things happening at the same time is a Supermoon, giving us incredibly gorgeous views of our Moon. The Moon will appear bigger and brighter than normal.

When is the best time to see the Supermoon?

The Supermoon will be at it’s peak at 11:52pm PST. It will be glowing and gorgeous. It is early in the morning that I am excited to see it, when it will be out over the ocean here in Malibu as our morning begins.

If you are an early riser, before the sun comes up, head on out to the beach to check it out – we will be!!

It will also be almost as big tomorrow night. The full moons are usually visible for 2-3 nights in a row and this one will not be any different.

For the best viewing, you want to make sure you are in an area with as little light pollution as possible. At the beach, up on a mountain, or out in a field that is not inner city are all great options.

Why is the Supermoon a big deal?

Seeing the moon so close and so bright is awe inspiring. It helps one gain respect for our earth and our solar system.

The Supermoon reminds us that we need many elements to survive. Full moons trigger many natural rhythms and breeding cycles. Full moons guide many animals on their migratory paths and give us all a special energy. They guide the tides of the ocean and are a vital factor in the Earth’s ability to support life.

Now that sounds like something to celebrate, right?

I hope you get the chance to get outside tonight and appreciate this wonderful planet we live on and all that we have to be thankful for.
