7 Ways to Practice Consciousness with Your Children

ways to practice consciousness with your children

I have always taught my children to be conscious, right from day 1.

After all, my own consciousness was awakened when I became pregnant and began taking a really good look at my lifestyle.

I spent the time pregnant and their first years learning about which foods benefit us and how to clean our house and our bodies without turning them into a toxic wasteland…

I spent their toddler years learning to appreciate all of the little things in life with them…

Now I am spending their elementary years exploring the world and encouraging them to live a life of gratitude with some very simple exercises that we do daily.

And it is really starting to pay off. Not only do my children believe in themselves, I actually hear them regularly encouraging their friends along telling them to believe in themselves and that they can do it!

Curious what I am doing that raises their awareness levels?

Here are 7 Ways to Practice Consciousness with Your Children

1.Eat clean and share it with your children. Food is what fuels us and keeps us going all day. When we are eating healthy, organic, natural food, we are giving our bodies what they need for optimal performance. By starting your children off right from the beginning with healthy, fresh options for food, as they grow that is what will become the norm for them and their body/mind will be sound.

2. Play the “Today I Will See” game. The laws of attraction are a fascinating thing, however a hard concept to share with your children. I began doing a little exercise with them, just to see if it would work. It did and has now become a fun game we play.

You see, one of the laws of attraction is that if you set an intention, verbalize it, think about it, then you will attract it. Because I was doing this with children, I started off with little things that I knew would be possible, more neutral things.

To see for yourself how this works, try this fun game.

In the morning, pick something that you would like to see that day. A beach ball, a hand-painted car, a person who forgot to put their shoes on and wore their slippers out of the house – it can be anything. Then have each child pick one thing and discuss them together. You have just set your intentions for the day on a most simple level.

At dinner or before bed, find out whose intentions were met that day – I bet not only did you see your intention, but you saw your child’s as well and vice versa! Isn’t it amazing how connected we are?

As your children grow, you can begin setting intentions on a bigger level. Because I started doing this with my children at such a young age, they have really learned to believe in themselves and that they have the power to set (and accomplish) their intentions while attracting success.

3. Play the ‘Favorite Part of the Day’ game. Each night, whether it is at dinner or during snuggle time, I am sure to ask each child what their favorite part of the day was. After they share their answer, we talk about how they appreciate that they were able to do/be/go to whatever their favorite part was. We acknowledge that not everyone in the world is as fortunate as we are and I make sure they understand that, which usually leads into a conversation about how we can help bring change for those who have less. I was also tickled pink when they started asking me what my favorite part of the day was, which they now regularly do!!

4. Play the ‘I am Grateful for’ game. I came up with this one on a road trip with my kids when I could not take the ‘I ate the ABC’s’ game any longer!! It is the same idea, except that each person takes a turn coming up with something that they are grateful for, first person’s has to start with A, second B, third C and so on. Bonus for anyone who remembers all of the ones in front of theirs!!

Not only does this put everyone in a good mood, but it shows the kids that we have a whole alphabet of things to be grateful for. Plus I love hearing the things they come up with!

5. Help your neighbors. Helping others is one of the most rewarding things to do in the world and is a lifestyle choice. Sharing it with your children is 2nd to that!

I take any opportunity to notice those around me in need and to do what I can to help – holding a door open, offering food, helping a neighbor with groceries or their yard work, protecting a strangers food at the beach from the glutinous seagulls, speaking up for those who are not able to and understanding what a person’s true motivations are without judging – any opportunity!

My kids see this conscious lifestyle choice of mine daily and with just a small amount of encouragement, jumped right on board. It makes us happy to make someone else smile.

6. Meditate together. Unfortunately, I did not learn to meditate until I was already a mom, I wish I had started it much younger. So I have taught my children how to sit quietly for 2 minutes to let your mind go. They are still young and really active so 2 minutes is just the right amount of time for them, however think about your child and figure out the amount of time that would work best for both of you. The gift of learning how to meditate is one that will stay with them throughout their lives.

7. Travel often together. Nothing opens our eyes like traveling. By traveling with our children we are opening up their hearts and minds to all of the wonders of this world. We are showing them that they are a part of something much bigger than themselves and that we all matter. The truly conscious person is always looking around themselves and doing what they can, and encouraging others, to make life better.

What are your great ways to practice consciousness with your children?
