Easy ways to get your kids to love school this year

The kids have been back to school for a couple of weeks now and are settling in nicely. The excitement of the new year has worn off, summer is quickly becoming a distant memory and another 8-9 months of school is stretching out before us…

Why Is It Important To Get Your Kids To Love School This Year?

Every year around this time I think about ways to keep my kids excited about going to school, about learning and growing. Having a healthy attitude about learning is important to maintain all throughout life and is something we can instill in our children at a very young age. Being that in this country, children spend roughly 35 of their 65 waking hours during a week in school, it is a pretty important place. School needs to be a safe, challenging, conscious and fun environment; and our children should learn to love being part of a thriving learning community of people.

Whether your kids are new to school or have been attending for several years already, there are several easy ways to get your kids to love school this year. I’ve tried all of them, and most of them I do regularly. Some of these ideas are mine and some I have found from various parenting experts in my never-ending research quest to grow and awaken as a conscious parent!!

6 Easy Ways To Get Your Kids To Love School This Year

  1. Walk the talk, be a positive role model for your child.

Just as a smile is contagious, so to is a parents’ attitude. So much research has been done to show that even small encouragement from one trusted parent can help a child relax and settle in. When a parent reads a book or takes some form of a class and looks speaks positively of the experience, it demonstrates to the child that everyone continues to learn and enjoys it. Showing you love to learn is one of the great easy ways to get your kids to love school this year.

  2. Get them involved.

Encourage them to join a sport or a club or run for student council, something they enjoy. Giving them an extra-curricular looks great on their transcripts while giving them something exciting to do with new friends.

  3. Set up homework routine.

Homework is part of school, no matter how much we dislike it. So it is best to set up a routine to get it done in a conscious way. Out with the old-school thought that homework needs to be done sitting rigidly at a desk in silence…. In with the listen to your child, observe with how they best understand and complete their homework and encourage this. Meaning maybe your child works better sprawled out on the floor, or standing at a table, or sitting in the kitchen with you. Figure it out, create a nice space in the appropriate place, allow for breaks as kids are in school all day and are already close to burned out, so be gracious with them, provide a healthy brain food snack and be consistent! 4. Take an interest!

Ask questions, have family dinner or breakfast together and talk to them. Share your experiences and ask them about theirs. You are the center of your child’s world and they love when they get to be the center of yours. Asking them about school, reinforcing lessons they learned there through science experiments or cooking creations and being positive about it shows them that school is to be loved and appreciated and is a great way to get your kids to love school this year.

  5. Set the tone for the day.

Sending kids off with a smile helps them build the self-esteem they need to get through the day. I love to ask each of my children to tell me 3 different positive things that they just know are going to happen that day. Laws of attraction, the power of projecting, it works! Try it, it may be just be the way to get your kids to love school this year.

  6. Encourage quality relationships.

School is a great place for children to find and form friendships with the people who will go through life with them. Encourage them to find a few of the right people instead of trying to be popular and fake-friendly to everyone. Let it happen naturally and encourage honesty.

I have found that by talking to my kids, by getting them excited for the day and all of the mysterious gifts it may bring, they stay excited to head to the classroom each morning all year long!

Cheers and happy learning!
