October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month – Here is How You Can Help

domestic violence

October 1st marks the start of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. So we are going to be talking a lot this month about survival, getting help, resources, how to help our family and more because honestly, we never truly know what is going on behind the scenes.

Domestic violence effects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men, this sadly has become a common fact. So chances are, there is someone in your inner circle who is being hurt and can’t find their way out.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) was born to help these people over 30 years ago. Today, they are a strong, yet little known, resource for victims, survivors, and family members reaching out with open arms to over 10 million people a year who are physically harmed by a loved one. Read more here about the history of the NCADV.

What I Didn’t Know About Domestic Violence

When I was in the situation, was that there are so many resources out there. For instance, did you know that dialing 211, like 911, will direct you to your local human resources office with someone prepared to help you get out of your situation or call the police for you if you are too scared? They have operators who are trained, know many programs to help you become independent and get out of your situation. There is help.

In addition to that there is the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1-800-799-7233 which fields more than 20,000 phone calls a day – because we are not alone, because there are people who care about us, because there is help.

There are websites that will help you find a shelter (click here), operators who will help you make a plan, resources that will help guide you through helping someone in need (click here).

So many are speaking up, taking a stand, reaching out, sharing what has happened to us. In this day and age, none of us should feel alone or embarrassed. We did not cause this. Our lights can shine. And yet, so many of us stay stuck in the dark.

We just need to know how to reach out, and how to accept that help. It’s time to let our light shine. domestic violence

Take A Stand Against Domestic Violence

Not because we can. Not because we should. But because we need to. Because someone out there can’t yet. But maybe, if we can be strong, if we can take a stand, if we can be loud enough, they will hear. They will borrow our strength and find their way out.

Last year during this month, I talked about different resources and tools to help. This year, we are going to get into the nitty gritty and talk about actual situations, warning signs, how to spot them, how to avoid them, and how to help them.

By talking about it, by taking a stand, by not being afraid to be real, we can bring a stop to domestic violence.

How To Take A Stand

Check out these great tips. Talk about it, don’t be afraid of it.
