Happy Covid Christmas!!

Happy Covid Christmas!!

Happy-Covid-Christmas

It is sure to be a different type of Christmas this year. I thought I would share a fun little holiday poem I wrote guided a bit by Twas the Night Before Christmas a poem written by Clement Clarke Moore. It’s one of my favorites so I had a bit of fun playing with the words!

Twas the night before our first Covid Christmas, And all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring, Not even a mouse.

Our stockings lay lost in a box, the angel slowly falling from the top of our tree,

And I thought to myself, Am I failing at this single parent thing, could it be?

My children in their holiday jammies were tucked in tight to sleep,

Waiting for Santa, dreaming, happy – while I look around in my holiday jammies trying not to make a peep.

There is so much darkness and pain for so many this Covid Christmas,

So much death, sickness, and isolation because of this Covid illness.

Yet delicious food sits ready for us for tomorrow’s feast,

We may be isolated, but we have our family and creature comforts at least.

The holiday plates were set on the table with care,

The scent of pine was all over the air.

The glow from the fire, the holiday lights on the mantle and the tree,

Shined in the dark, brightly reminding me.

Our home is warm,

My children are happy,

My wine glass is full,

And soon will be empty!

Santa is here, in spirit, it’s true,

Blessing me and blessing you.

So if up on your roof you don’t hear that clatter,

There are so many gifts inside already, it doesn’t matter.

The spirit of Santa is alive in us, each one,

I remember this as I look around thinking of my daughter and son.

How they are strong, smart, happy and funny,

A tribute to my single parenting and their community.

As I refilled my wine, tempting Santa to show,

I sat with a smile, because this I know.

Santa is the real deal,

In kindness, in spirit, in community, in how we heal.

His eyes can be seen in the twinkle of a child’s eye who does believe,

His laugh can be heard in the stillness of late Christmas Eve,

His smile is everywhere first thing Christmas morning,

His gifts always seem to appear without warning.

‘Twas the night before our first Covid Christmas eve, when everything was quiet, nothing stirred,

I knew magical things were ahead. Smiling, I closed my eyes and somewhere in the distance I heard:

“Happy Christmas to all and to all a Good Night”

I knew he was close, I didn’t want to scare him!

So as I drifted off to sleep, I think on a whim.

Thank you Santa, for all of the cheer you bring,

Please stay healthy and help us kick this Covid thing!

From my family to yours, Happy Christmas! We hope you have an amazing day remembering the true spirit of this time together with our families. Remember to take some you time and reflect. Peace and love to you and yours.
