Mindful Breathing – What You Need To Know

mindful-breathing

Ever notice how when you get stressed, angry or are feeling anxious that you start breathing more rapidly and heavier? Which in turn causes your heart to flutter, your blood pressure to sore and your gut feels like it is literally trying to jump out of your body.

This feeling is just awful. And when I found out that it is just a chemical reaction to our emotions and there is a way to control it… it changed my world!! Our physical beings are very much attached to our emotional health. Once you understand that, it provides a new awareness of our physical ailments and how we can be at our healthiest.

What Is Mindful Breathing?

Mindful breathing is simply the practice of concentrating on your breath. You use your breath as an object of concentration to help you focus and slow down thus easing your stress and anxiety.

In times of anxiety and stress, I would always find my mind darting around, overwhelmed, getting nothing accomplished. This partially happens because we take shorter breathes during this time, giving our brains less oxygen preventing them from thinking straight. Make sense?

I started taking 5 minutes a day to breath deeply, pray and set my intentions. This grew into learning about mindful breathing and how it can help immediately when I became anxious or stressed. Now I practice it regularly.

It is so simple, so easy and can be done anywhere at anytime. You just need to be aware of it. You need to be able to listen to your body and be understanding of it.

How Do You Do Mindful Breathing?

When you are feeling anxious, angry or stressed STOP for a minute and follow these steps.

  1. Stop, listen to your body. Become aware of the physical responses your body is showing.
  2. Find a place to sit down.
  3. Close your eyes.
  4. Breath in through your nose for a count of 6.
  5. Hold it in for a count of 6.
  6. Breath out through your mouth for a count of 6.
  7. Repeat until you feel your body calming down, until your mind clears.

I do this breathing exercise almost daily, on bad days, I do it A LOT!!! It is amazing what oxygen (and lack there of) does for us and the effects simple acknowledgements can make.

Try it, you’ll see!!

Cheers!
