Our Day Trip To Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boysenberry Festival

boysenberry festival

This past weekend we took a really fun day trip to Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA where we had been invited to come check out their unique Boysenberry Festival.

Boysenberries are a sweet and tart berry that has amazing benefits for our bodies – you can read all about them here. All boysenberries anywhere in the world can be traced back to a plant at Knott’s Berry Farm!

The Boysenberry Festival at Knott’s Berry Farm opened up Saturday and runs for 2 more weeks until April the 3rd. It is a fun festival featuring over 70 kinds of recipes using boysenberries and several different types of boysenberry wine, beer and cider. Plus there are special shows and entertainment all throughout the park and let’s not forget the fun rides…!!!

What to bring to the Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival

I have never been a light packer and with the arrival of our traveling kids, our bags have only gotten heavier (or at least that is my current excuse)! Even for a day trip, there are several things I like to bring along to ensure a successful, fun, family day.

For elementary age children, here is what I suggest you pack in a back pack:

  1. Change of shirt, shorts and socks – just in case of spills or getting soaked on the flume!
  2. Sunscreen
  3. Hats
  4. Sweatshirts – it gets chilly when the sun goes down!
  5. Small towel
  6. Basic first-aid kit
  7. Be sure to grab a map of Knott’s Berry Farm and tuck it into your bag upon arrival so you will easily be able to find the bathrooms and snack shacks in a pinch!

There are plenty of water and snacks to be found at every corner, so no need to bring those.

What to wear to the Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival

Layers! Definitely layer up. The mornings are warm, the afternoon is hot and the evening is chilly – welcome to Cali, the land of everything! 😉

What to expect at the Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival

A lot of people, great food and a fun, family experience!

Opening day of the festival was packed, and it was so nice to see so many families out enjoying a beautiful, sunny, California day. Upon check in, you are given your tasting card allowing you 6 delicious servings of locally made boysenberry dishes and your drink card good for 6 different tastings of the boysenberry wine, beer or cider.

As you pass through the entrance gates, you feel like you have just been transported to an old western town! There are folks walking around in period costumes, an interactive village, the Peanuts Characters wandering about, engaging shows to take in,  and really cool rides to check out.

They even had a house dedicated to kids learning how to pick boysenberries and turn them into a delicious pie – so fun!!

And the smells!! The scent of boysenberry treats was swirling around making our mouths water! We had a lot of fun going from booth to booth sampling all of the food. The boysenberry BBQ sauce does have a bit of a sting to it though – it is spicy so be forewarned – this sauce has a nice sweet but spicy taste to it. The deserts were incredible and boysenberry ice cream has become a new fave for our family!

We even saw our first pie-eating contest! Lucky for us all of the big food eating pros where there so we got to see a food contest done right! It was the craziest thing I have ever seen and was so fun to watch. The winner (Joey Chestnut – you can find him on twitter @JoeyJaws) ate 14.5 lbs of pie in 8 minutes!!

Next we got to check out the new 4D ride – Voyage to the Iron Reef. It was a great ride – the graphics were so real!!! And the log flume was one of the best flumes we have ever been on.

A little tip – Knott’s Berry Farm does have a Fast Lane pass. The lines were pretty long on this day so I highly recommend getting the fast lane pass – they are worth every penny!

There was so much going on at this festival, it was a great day. We ended it with a glow-in-the-dark dance party with a family-friendly DJ spinning up on the stage. The kids and I had such a good time bustin’ our moves in the dark with loads of other new friends.

Our day trip to Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boysenberry Festival was tons of fun and something that all of us will remember forever.

Have you ever been?

You can get your tickets to the Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival here, but hurry, the festival is only for 2 more weeks!
