5 Interesting Wine Facts You Never Knew
I love a good bottle of wine! And let’s be honest here, a nice glass of wine at the end of the day helps us parents unwind a bit! However wine is complex, and there are lots of interesting wine facts I never knew. 😉
Recently, at a foodie event, I met a professional wine taster and a master sommelier who both totally schooled me on some interesting wine facts that I had never heard before.
So in honor of National Wine Day, I am going to share the 5 interesting wine facts we never knew that I just learned.
5 Interesting Wine Facts You Never Knew
Interesting Wine Facts #1:
Never ask for or describe a wine as dry. Why? Because 90% of wines are dry so this does not help your sommelier when ordering! Instead try talking about the body of the wine. Tell them you prefer either a light, medium or full bodied wine; they will go from there.
On Vinepair.com the “Wine Body Definition is: In wine talking about body is not a discussion of shapeliness, but instead an analysis of the way a wine feels inside our mouth.” You can read their interesting full article on the body of wine here.
Interesting Wine Facts #2:
Too cold is better than too warm. Heat is actually wine’s biggest enemy so you always want to keep your wine in cooler temperatures. If you don’t have a tempered wine cellar, your refrigerator is just fine for storage.
Interesting Wine Facts #3:
Studies have shown that wine has many health benefits, specifically red wine. You can read my post here on a study that was done suggesting that 1 glass of red wine has the same effect on your body as a 1 hour workout does!!! Based upon having 1 or 2 – 4 ounce glasses a day wine has been proven to reduce the risks of: heart attack and disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cataracts, colon cancer and it slows brain decline! Interesting Wine Facts #4:
Wine drinkers have a 34 percent lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers.
Interesting Wine Facts #5:
Boxed wine is actually really good! It is huge in other countries accounting for more than 50% of wine sales in Brazil, Australia, Sweden and Norway yet here in the USA it accounts for only 18% of sales. Here is what you need to know: it is only cheaper because of the packaging. The quality of the wine is still excellent and you get more than just 1 bottle this way!! 😉 They are even making wine juice boxes now, perfect for an afternoon beach day!
Not that I needed another excuse to open a bottle of wine, but now I have no guilt for drinking a glass or two of wine in the evenings!! 😉
Happy National Wine Day – what will be in your glass tonight?
