Summer Day Trip #FamilyTravel Idea

gardens of the world

We are almost mid-summer and the slower days of summer are rolling right along. I wanted to do something different with the kids and there is this place called The Gardens of the World just through the canyon in Thousand Oaks that I have always wanted to visit.

The gardens of the world was created by Ed and Lynn Hogan. They are avid travelers who wanted to share the various cultures of the world they found with a town they love. The Gardens of the World are magnificent and well worth a visit not only for the beauty you will find, but for all of the learning experiences available in this garden.

Since mine will no longer sit in a stroller I have to find fun ways to keep them occupied on hikes and walks in nature places. They are interested in everything and hungry to learn.

So I started making photo scavenger hunts for them and thought this would be the perfect activity for one of our cloudy mornings of late!

Print out a copy of the scavenger hunt I made for my kids here: Gardens of the world photo scavenger hunt 1

Here is what we did to prepare for our visit to the Gardens of the World:

    1. Have kid safe camera’s for them to use. Each of my children has one of these, my daughter the pink and my son the blue:

We love them and have been using them for over 2 years now with no problems. They take great pictures and travel really well.

  1. Create their scavenger pack with them. Have them choose a bag they will be happy carrying, then fill it with camera, binoculars, magnifying glass, notebook with pencil and a water. I have travel size sunscreens that I have mine carry with them so they get in the habit of having it, but this is not necessary, just make sure to put some sunscreen on them and you before you begin your hunt!
  2. Print out and go over the scavenger list so you can be familiar with what you will be looking for.
  3. Head over to Gardens of the World and start your hunt. Parking and entrance is free however donations are greatly appreciated.
  4. Have fun and be respectful of their rules! Keep snacks in the designated snack area and be sure not to be too disruptive!
  5. If you take your time, this should take about 21/2 hours then have a picnic in their beautiful snack area.
  6. When you get home, pick the best pictures and have fun making a journal out of them, have each child make their own. Write notes on your favorites and why or any info that you learned.

Happy Hunting!
