The Thing About Depression
This word carries such a stigma within our society – Depression. People want to avoid it and pretend it is not real. And unless you have dealt with it or are close to someone who has, it can be really hard to understand.
It is right up there with domestic violence on the list of things people are hesitant to admit and talk about.
But we have to keep the conversation going, we have to become aware of the problems plaguing our society. And depression is definitely one of them.
Depression affects over 18 million adults (that is 1 in 10) in America and over 300 million adults worldwide. Depression accounts for almost $23 billion in lost workdays each year. Depression is the primary reason why someone commits suicide every 12 minutes here in the USA.
Depression is one of the most debilitating conditions in the world, being rated in the same category as terminal stage cancer AND is the leading cause of disability worldwide – being a major contributor to the overall global burden of diseases.
I know, because I have lived with it. Depression is real. It can be completely devastating, it was for me, and a very scary thing to go through when you don’t understand.
But it is not the end! Not by any means, I am living proof of that!
It affects so many people all over the world, and so many people have been able to overcome it, that there is always hope. Understanding the facts about depression can help to save your life or the life of someone you love.
7 Things You Should Know About Depression
- Many factors can cause depression. The top are – abuse, financial strain, divorce, loss, seasonal changes, hormones, brain chemistry imbalances, pregnancy, genetics, trauma and several more things can easily take a person into a deep depression from whence they need help to get out of.
- Depression does not always have a particular reason. Sometimes we can feel sad but there does not seem to be any reason. This is usually because the chemicals in our brain are off from some form of trauma. Just because there is no reason, does not mean their depression is not real.
- Depression is much more than sadness. Everyone feels sad sometimes, but when that sadness turns into changing life habits such as change of sleep habits, lowered sex drive, change of eating habits, becoming very moody, self-isolation – these are all signs of depression and that it is time to get some help.
- Depression is a real illness. It can be beyond someone’s control. A person is not weak or crazy, they have an imbalance, and their body mind soul is calling for realignment and help.
- Children are not immune to depression. It is important to be aware of noticing these signs in your children too. Depression affects 25% of children in America.
- Untreated depression is the leading cause of suicide. We need to be aware. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help or speak to someone you are worried about.
- Depression is treatable. In so many ways. There is hope, there is help. I got better, as so many have. You do not need to go through this alone.
