In the spirit of keeping the Trauma Awareness alive, today I want to share 10 things I bet you never realized about trauma and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Many think immediately of veterans or victims of horrible crimes when we hear these two words, but the sad reality is that trauma wears many hats and many times gets left untreated leading to PTSD which can turn into complex PTSD.
It is reported that 70% of adults in the USA have experienced some form of trauma… and those are just the reported accounts.
So many times trauma is dismissed and then later PTSD from it is completely missed. And we are left to suffer on our own, wondering what is wrong with us as the people around us don’t understand at all.
Talk about frustrating… I’ve been there and done that. So I want to take some time and share 10 things about trauma and PTSD that I bet you never knew before…

- Trauma can be considered as anything not nurturing that alters your view of yourself and how you relate to the world. PTSD can occur when trauma is not attended to properly.
- Symptoms can appear years and years later; taking you time to understand and dig through the root of your pain to that initial trauma that went unnoticed. Symptoms vary from person to person, but are very real to each of us, so it can be hard for others to detect or understand.
- Women are twice as likely to experience it and develop PTSD than man are. Because it is so highly associated with vets, many don’t realize that there are actually more women struggling with this than men.
- It’s not something someone can just get over. Trauma and PTSD have lasting physical and mental affects and it is very challenging to overcome. It is frustrating when people just expect you to be ok with one conversation or a few days, which will often make situations worse. So just be understanding that it does take time and a whole lotta love and awareness.
- Symptoms are rarely obvious, and often are completely misunderstood by those around them. They are unique to each person.
- Therapy can help, healing is 100% possible. It takes the right tribe and mindset and hard work, but it is possible.
- There are four different reactions to trauma – Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn. When a trauma victim becomes triggered their mind and body go to one of these 4 responses. I tend to flight and freeze, but it is different for everyone. It is important to be able to identify when a loved one becomes triggered where they have gone too involuntarily.
- PTSD is often misdiagnosed as borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety – because of lack of awareness.
- One of the greatest protectors against developing PTSD and other lasting trauma effects is social support. Knowing, sharing, understanding, is caring.
- Trauma and PTSD are brain injuries, they take time to understand, heal and must receive treatment.
