Define Your Personal Mission
Last week I talked about Values, and how outlining them in writing is the first step to really and truly getting to know yourself.
I hope you have had some time this week to not only think about them, but to write them down.
Because now it is time to talk about the next step – defining your mission in life, your purpose!
Why do I need a personal mission statement?
A mission statement provides clarity while giving you a sense of purpose. It provides you the opportunity to establish what is important to you and helps to guide you along your path.
Many studies have shown that when people have a purpose, a reason for living, they are much happier. The happiest people I know all are very involved in something.
Remember, your life is worth an honorable motive! Let’s do something great!
What is a personal mission statement?
One or two sentences describing the value you create, who you are creating it for and why.
Not only does a personal mission statement provide you with a clear path to success, it also allows you to say no to everyday distractions.
It should change over great amounts of time.
Every 5 years I like to take a look at my values and my personal mission statement and reevaluate it. I love having them in writing as I can see very clearly how I have grown through the different phases of life.
How do I write my personal mission statement?
There is no right or wrong way to write this. It is up to YOU! Just do your best to be clear, exciting and brief.
After I had defined my personal values, I thought about them for a few days.
One day I sat down with pen and paper and asked myself these three questions:
- What inspires me the most?
- What is my life’s aim?
- What are my values telling me to pursue?
Here is my personal mission statement:
To inspire people to live a healthier life, to travel and take new risks, and to be mindful of both themselves and others to improve our quality of life and that of future generations – Malibu Mama Loves
Other examples of personal mission statements:

Denise Morrison, CEO, Campbell Soup Company – To serve as a leader, live a balanced life, and apply ethical principles to make a significant difference.
A personal mission statement is a valuable tool to have on the road to success. It is an integral part of knowing who you are and what you stand for in life.
