12 Father Son Day Trip Ideas
I have had such a great response from my Mother Son Day Trip post and several requests for Father’s ideas, so I thought it would be fun to share the things my kids do for Daddy time!
Just as I try to spend one on one time with each child, I make sure my spouse gets the time in too. In our family we schedule in 2 days per month over the course of one weekend, where my daughter spends time with me while my son spends time with hubby and vice versa the next day.
Getting one-on-one time in is super important for both parents and is something to be conscious of. I find that by making a list and scheduling it, we stick to it and get the much needed time in and everyone is in a better frame of mind. But if we don’t… well, let’s just say I notice a difference in all of us and it is not positive! 😉
You will notice that some of the ideas are similar to the mother day trips and many are new. Doing this provides a unique opportunity for each parent/child combo to really get to know each other by seeing some of the same things, thru different eyes. It also allows for very interesting future family conversations over dinner where no one needs to feel left out. We just toggle them so the kids are not doing the same activity 2 days in a row and talk to them about the different activities so they know everyone gets a chance at everything!
12 Father Son Day Trip Ideas
Beach Day Father Son Day Trip
This is always my husband’s favorite. He loves the beach and the ability to bring just one child down there. It is a whole different experience one-on-one! Find any kind of beach nearest to you – lake, river, ocean and plan a day trip there for some truly important bonding time.
National Park Hike Father Son Day Trip
Put on some good foot gear, pack your favorite snacks and head to your nearest National Park to explore. Have fun spotting wild life and different types of plants. Take this time to talk to your son about nature and how to take care of it. Be sure to carry all of your trash out and set a great example for your little guy! You can find your nearest national park here.
Airplane or Train Museum Father Son Day Trip
Many train stations and smaller airports have museums, plus there are aviation museums all around, try googling it to find one near you. Totally fun times for a great guys day!
Army Navy Air Force Father Son Day Trip
Find a local park with some form of national service monument. Pack a picnic, some outdoor games and a blanket and head over to the park. Enjoy eating and sharing the monument with your son, explain to him what the monument is and who the people are that have fought for the fortunate way in which we get to live. Take some time to appreciate their sacrifice by relishing in the fact that we are able to go to any park and have lunch and play games and be FREE – something many people are still not.
Mini Golf Father Son Day Trip
This is always a favored day trip paired with lunch out, silly bets and lots of ice cream!
A Photography Scavenger Nature Hunt Father Son Day Trip
This is a fun one. Put together a long list of things you wish to photograph. Pack your favorite lunch then go get lost finding things and photographing them in just the right way!
Lazer Tag Father Son Day Trip
We all love lazer tag and getting to play one-on-one is super brutal and hilarious! Hubby will usually take my son out to lunch, after they will play 2 crazy rounds of lazer tag and then get ice cream on the way home.
Monster Truck Rally Father Son Day Trip
Find a monster truck rally near you and make a day of it. Just don’t forget your ear plugs as well as some for your son! Get dinner before or after, depending on the time, and talk all about cars, trucks or whatever your little guy is into.
Fishing Father Son Day Trip
Whatever kind in nearby – river, lake, creek, ocean, off a dock or pier – any place will do for fishing. Pack up a tackle box, all of your favorite treats (spare clothes for when someone inevitably falls in!!) and head out for a day that neither of you will ever forget.
Water Park Father Son Day Trip
Most waterparks have different sections for different age children so there is something for every child. Waterparks are so much fun and offer a great opportunity for you the Dad to feel like a kid again, which will help 2 fold. You will relate to your son better and he will see the fun side of you that perhaps he does not get to see as often.
Volunteering Father Son Day Trip
It is so good for the kids to see both parents giving back to the community in some way, big or small. It is even better for you to bring your son along to help by your side. This teaches them to appreciate their lives and lets you appreciate your amazing son whom I am sure will be quick to help in any way he can, once he sees you do it.
Holiday Gift Father Son Day Trip
Seeing you do something nice for their mother and other siblings, plus encouraging him to do his own nice things for said people is a valuable lesson that all too often gets lost. We do not HAVE to buy or make something for someone, we do it to appreciate them. Make a fun afternoon out of teaching your son this wonderful lesson.
I hope these 12 ideas have helped to inspire you to take even just one father son day trip – which I know will lead to another once you see how rewarding and fun it is to spend one-on-one time!
Safe travels!
