Spending one-on-one time with each of my children is one of my favorite things about parenting.

Recently I posted 12 Mother Daughter Day Trip Ideas so today I want to share our 12 Mother Son Day Trip Ideas with you!

12 Mother Son Day Trip Ideas

1. Museum/Lunch Out Mother Son Day Trip

Let your son pick a museum within driving distance, or for littles choose an interactive children’s museum, and you pick the restaurant. Enjoy the museum together, than have fun talking about it with your son over lunch. Find out what his favorite exhibit was, talk about the theme of the museum and let the conversation drift into things about his life.

2. Zoo or Aquarium/Lunch Out Mother Son Day Trip

Locate the nearest zoo or aquarium and a new place to have lunch in. This is a great time to talk to him about how it is everyone’s responsibility to care for all of Mother Nature’s creatures while making great memories by having an awesome time learning together.

3. Lazer Tag/Lunch Out Mother Son Day Trip

Lazer tag is good fun while getting great exercise together. Make a day trip out of it by finding a lazer tag facility in the next town over then trying a new place for lunch. Enjoy the ride and be sure to take time to ask questions about things going on with him.

4. Mini Golf Mother Son Day Trip

Mini golf is always a good time. Add in lunch afterwards and maybe even ice cream and you will have the perfect mother son day trip adventure!

5. A Scavenger Bug Hunt Mother Son Day Trip

Pack a picnic, print a list of local bugs out, and head over to your favorite spot in the woods. Let him hold the camera and have fun finding bugs on the list and photographing them. Enjoy your picnic together and take this opportunity to talk to him about not leaving garbage behind as it can harm the very bugs you were just photographing. Once home, print some of the photos and make a bug journal together.

6. A Treasure Hunt Mother Son Day Trip

This one requires a bit of planning, but it is so rewarding and fun – totally worth it. Get a large piece of construction paper and draw some form of a map on it, leading to a place you are able to pre-bury some form of an age-appropriate treasure in – marked with a giant X and clues as to where he should look. It does not need to be perfect, remember it is an old map and they did things differently then 😉 !!

Roll it up and hide it in the garage or your yard somewhere that he will be able to find it. When he does find it, get excited and make the date to follow it…!! Make some form of a treasure that your son will love and the morning you are to go, get up early and go get it buried. Pack a picnic then get onto your hunt! This can be done on any scale, it just depends how old your son is. When you find the treasure, have a picnic and marvel at how amazing this world is – you just found treasure!

7. Water Park Mother Son Day Trip

Waterslides are awesome and most water-parks have super fun activities for all ages. Pack some lunch, towels and sunscreen and have a fantastic day with your little man!

8. Beach Picnic Mother Son Day Trip

A day spent at the beach with your full attention on your son is a great day indeed! Find a lake, ocean, river or creek beach and set up camp for the day. Notice all of the wildlife around you and how peaceful you feel? Your son will too!

9. Volunteer Mother Son Day Trip

We are so fortunate. A great way to appreciate what we have is by helping others. Whether it is volunteering in a soup kitchen, cleaning out your closet to donate to the homeless or those in need, visiting an elderly home or helping an elderly neighbor in need, find some way to give back and make a day of it with your son.

10. Farm (or farmer’s market) Mother Son Day Trip

Plan this one for the fall when most farms are in full harvest. A lot of them will open up to the public for a chance for others to see what it is like to be on a farm and where our food actually does come from – which will spark some really interesting conversation! If you don’t have a farm near you, check here to find a farmer’s market near you and go spend a couple of hours walking around. Engage the farmers in conversations, talk about how the food is grown, collected and then sold. There are so many opportunities for learning on this day trip so be sure to take advantage of as much as possible.

11. National Park Hike and Picnic Mother Son Day Trip

Get some good footwear on, pack a yummy picnic and bring lots of water, head to a national park near you and go enjoy the day! Take a hike together and eat together pretending to be the prince and queen of the forest! 😉

12. Holiday Gift Mother Son Day Trip

My little man is not a shopper. Instead, we plan a day trip to a pottery or craft studio and spend the morning crafting the holiday gifts he would like to give. I love watching him create his own gifts to give to his friends and family members, this is one of my favorite day trips of the year!

Having one-on-one time with our children allows:

  1. us the chance to really get to know each child
  2. for each child to really get to know us
  3. for each child to feel special
  4. completely strengthens the mother/child bond.
