The Surfrider Malibu Set to Open Early 2016
What once was an iconic Malibu spot for surfer’s both local and visiting during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s has since become a distant memory and a run-down building on the side of PCH. The beach and the call of the waves remain however.
Z/K Hospitality co-founders Alessandro Zampedri and Sanford Kunkel heard that call, purchased the property, assembled a team of all-star, local experts to bring us the next generation The Surfrider Malibu and began construction.
The Surfrider Malibu is reborn!!
Mr. Zampedri and Mr. Kunkel began this journey in 2014 with the intention of restoring and improving this once vibrant hotel. They have a passion for reviving buildings with fascinating histories and even though this is their first west coast restoration, they have put together a dream team who will create something incredible to easily fill the currently open niche market of affordable rooms in Malibu!
The Surfrider Malibu Dream Team
Curious as to who the dream team is? Doug Burdge, a Malibu resident, is the architect. Mr. Burdge has designed many homes in Malibu as well as the recently opened, and amazing might I add, Trancas Country Market. (Psst – the Trancas Country Market is home to some of my fave shops and the vintage grocer – definitely stop by when visiting Malibu for an authentic taste of the Malibu Lifestyle!) Mr. Burdge has already given so much beauty to Malibu, I can’t wait to see what he delivers along with the help of Nathan Jones and David Charvet of the Jones Builders Group.
The Surfrider Malibu inside scoop
Mr. Zampedri, Mr. Kunkel, and Mr. Burdge along with the help of the Jones Builders Group gutted the whole inside of the building but are keeping as much of the original structure as possible. The Malibu Surfside News reports Mr. Burge saying:
“We decided to go with a coastal modern look, with clean lines and vaulted ceilings — something that really speaks to the location, because what location is better than that?” He said. “We’re introducing woods and metal roofs. Malibu is really moving toward having a local, regional aesthetic, so we wanted to maintain the classic look.”
One of Burdge’s structural design changes involves moving the hotel’s entrance to the rear of the building to protect the privacy of the guests.
… he said the team has submitted applications for a rooftop deck and an outdoor entertaining space with jacuzzis on the property to add more appeal. And, for convenience, surfboard storage and outdoor showers will be provided for guests.
Sounds pretty wonderful right? And The Surfrider Malibu is going to be affordable! I can’t wait!
The Surfrider Malibu is perfectly located right across the street from one of our gorgeous Malibu beaches, and just a short walk from the Adamson House as well as many 5 star restaurants. Not to mention the Malibu Pier is just across the way too!
I have every confidence that The Surfrider Malibu will be a fantastic place to have your 2016 family holiday! I am planning to stay there as soon as it opens and share my experience with you so be sure to look for us there in 2016!
