Here is how we navigate these crazy long (and sometime short) lines to successfully get through airport security fast. And yes, the kids are in tow… always!!

1^st Tip on How to Get Through Airport Security Fast

Find a trusted traveler program. There are a few of them and they have spread into most cities across the US. The TSA’s PreCheck program is a good one for domestic travel, also check GlobalEntry.gov out for international travel. Both of these programs pre-screen members, occasionally without removing shoes or laptops. They also offer exclusive lines making both customs and security a breeze with little wait.

2^nd Tip on How to Get Through Airport Security Fast

Join a frequent flyer program. These often come with added benefits like an express line through security so check out the frequent flyer program with the airline you travel the most.

3^rd Tip on How to Get Through Airport Security Fast

Dress nicely! Take a few minutes before you leave to put on clean, nice clothes, brush your teeth, fix your hair and whatever else you need to do. Remember slip on shoes, in case you have to take them off at security and to choose something that does not require a belt or have any metal in it. Be sure to empty pockets of anything left in there to prevent any hassles. Avert difficulties from developing in the first place by dressing in professional attire.

4^th Tip on How to Get Through Airport Security Fast

Keep an eye on the security agents at the head of each line. The shortest line may not be the fastest. Try to have a look at which agents are moving the most efficiently and try to get in that line!!

Be kind and courteous. Everyone wants to get through as quickly as possible, just like you. Try complimenting the security agents and just being pleasant in general. Not only will you get through faster, but it will lower your risk of further screening.

6^th Tip on How to Get Through Airport Security Fast

Organize!!! Pack your carry-on for easy screening and re-packing. Have all food and liquids under 3.4oz packed in a clear Ziploc bag and ready to lay out. The 3-1-1 rule from TSA.gov states:

“Liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less per container; must be in 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. The bag limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring.”

Be prepared to have to pack it all back in quickly at the other end. The more prep work you do to organize your carry-on as you pack it, the faster your security experience will be.

Have any electronics charged and ready to screen in case they ask you to test them.

Leave any gifts you are bringing unwrapped in case they want to open them and check in side.

7^th Tip on How to Get Through Airport Security Fast

If you have any questions, there is an app for the TSA.gov. This app allows you to enter in an item and it will tell you if you can bring it or not and if there are any restrictions to it. Pretty cool!

8^th Tip on How to Get Through Airport Security Fast

Keep your ID and boarding card handy as it will be repeatedly checked as you go through security. To make it faster just keep them someplace easy to grab and put back.
