5 Ways To Stay Healthy This Winter
The winter season is here and as always kicks off in lots of excitement with the holidays. It is a long season in which colds, flus, stomach and throat viruses all seem to flourish.
I’ve spent many winters on both US coasts at this point and I can tell you from North to South, East to West, winter brings a chill, crazy weather patterns and that icky feeling at some point to almost everyone! No one can escape it.
Many of us fall off the healthy eating path as we go from holiday festivity to festivity, then get tired and spend more time inside in January and February. We eat more heavy comfort foods and drink more due to the weather which just makes a recipe for a lowered immune system allowing those pesky germs to get in and wreak havoc. Not to mention during these months we tend to be inside breathing more recycled air…
So whether you have littles bringing germs in, you are traveling or are just around a lot of people, there are several things you can do to boost that immune system and beat the funk this winter!
5 Ways To Stay Healthy This Winter
- Get on a healthy sleep cycle. The benefits of sleep are massive. Not enough of it lowers our immune system defenses a huge amount. Check out these tips on creating a healthy sleep routine and make sure to be conscious of how much sleep you are getting. Early on in winter thanks to the holidays we tend to get less sleep, then the new year’s slump comes where we get too much. Balance is necessary and will keep you healthy this winter!
- Be conscious of what you eat. In winter months we tend to overdo on party food and then thick heavy comfort foods to keep us warm. This also lowers our immune system defenses. We need to continue clean eating along with the extras the parties bring. So choose more fruits and veg when meal planning and snacking. Balance… did I say that already?!
- Eat a warm breakfast. I know you don’t want to hear it – again, for the millionth time – BUT breakfast is the most important meal of the day. During the winter have a nice porridge or cereal or warm breakfast will keep you feeling fuller all day and give your immune system a nice boost. Did I also mention breakfast is like brain fuel and will power you to make much better choices all day?!
- Exercise!! So important. Even if you are snowed or rained in – exercise your body!! We have to use it to keep it healthy, right? So if you choose to skip the gym or talk yourself out of doing your sit-ups and squats at home… you are only hurting you. Even a nice brisk 15-minute walk counts. You need to get up, get moving and show your body it is a priority. Get the whole family involved or even try new activities with everyone, exercise can be fun.
- Good skin care. Our skin is our bodies biggest organ, believe it or not. Part of this is what you eat, part is getting exercise and during the winter, the biggest part is staying moisturized and hydrated. Drink plenty of water and check out these great tips on maintaining radiant skin all winter long.
