No matter how or where you are traveling, snacks are an important thing to pack. What we eat affects us in a big way; who wants to be feeling crappy from that questionable airplane or gas station food on a travel day? Not me!

So I find it best to always pack our own travel snacks. Here are a few things that usually travel with us and give us the fuel we need to arrive happy and ready for adventure!

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #1:

Fresh fruit! Bring whatever is in season, easy to peel and grown locally if possible! Bananas always make the cut, they are easy, filling and packed with power! Other fruits I love to bring: apple or pear slices, sliced grapes, mandarin oranges (these are great on a plane, tasty and they can fix any bad smells when you peel them!), apricots and sliced peaches.

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #2:

Homemade muffins! There are so many amazing, easy recipes floating around, try one and bring a bunch on the trip with you. Muffins are easy to eat, tasty and can be so good for you. However, the muffins-that-are-really-cheap-cupcakes that are for sale at most ‘pit stops’ or airports are not good for you so skip them! As long as you pack it in a clear container you will be able to bring them on the airplane.

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #3:

Smoothies! Make your favorite recipe and bring them along if you are traveling by car, bus or train. They will not let you through security at the airport with one however, so drink it en route to the airport for some extra energy.

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #4:

Your favorite granola/power bars. Bring enough to last for your whole trip. Whether you make them or buy them, these are a fantastic way to get some great power in a pinch. If you have the ability to bring a cooler, try packing a yogurt cup. Open and crumble your bar onto the top of it for a super healthy and yummy snack!

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #5:

Individual bags of crackers or chippies. Grab a few of your favorite bags of healthy crackers or chippies and throw them in your carry-on or travel snack container. If you are able to, bring a cooler, bring some cheese as well! String cheese makes a great snack for the kids!

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #6:

Homemade Popcorn! This is our family fave that started off with my grandfather. Every time we would be leaving his house, he would make a huge bag – one for me and one for my bro – of popcorn. We loved it, and still do. I now do this for every road trip, train trip and even airplane trip for my kids (ok, I make myself a bag too!!).

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #7:

Fruit pouches! These have halted a tantrum or two! I only buy fruit pouches for travel days so they have become a bit of treat in our house. Fruit pouches are super easy to eat and almost mess free! I always bring a bunch on the plane, just make sure to buy the smaller ones – 4oz or less!

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #8:

Raw (or frozen) Veggies. Try carrot sticks, sugar snap peas, sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes. Frozen peas are great to as they pull double duty as a fun snack for little fingers and as a cooler pack! Bring a small, clear container with hummus or tzatziki to dip the veggies in. If you are traveling in your car, feel free to bring peanut {or some kind of nut} butter for dipping. If traveling on a plane, train or bus it is best to stay away from bringing any kind of nut as you do not know who has a severe nut allergy. This can really delay your trip, not to mention risk someone’s life, so best to not bring nuts along!

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #9:

Dry O’s cereal! Have your kids put some O’s cereal onto a string and tie it together for them to play with and bite the O’s off! Or make individual containers for each child to have.

Healthy Travel Snack Ideas #10:

Drinks! Bring plenty of water! Also make sure to pack a few healthy juice/sparkling water drinks according to what your travelers like. If you are flying, you will want to bring empty sippy cups for your children and an empty water bottle for yourself. Plan on buying water once you get through security.

Family Travel Tip: Pack lots of paper towels, wipes and hand sanitizer and keep handy at all times!
