5 Reasons to Have a Destination Wedding & Where To Go

reasons to have a destination wedding

Our first wedding was in Newport, RI at a venue that my mother had found and fell in love with.

I remember it being a fun event that took loads of planning beforehand which left me exhausted afterwards.

Now, as I am starting to plan our second wedding (we will be renewing our vows on our 10 year anniversary this September) I think back to everything that went into planning that special day. And though I would not change any of it for the world, I do see the wisdom in a destination wedding! It is our choice for our second wedding.

Here are my 5 Reasons to Have a Destination Wedding

#1 reason to have a destination wedding: The average American wedding lasts around 5 – 6 hours with the bride and groom spending most of that time running from table to table trying to greet each and every guest. A destination wedding lasts a minimum of 3 days and gives everybody plenty of time to be together without the rushing around. As the bride and groom, you really get to enjoy your guests and each other without all of the pressure.

#2 reason to have a destination wedding: Your wedding will be epic! Everyone will remember your wedding forever, unlike all of your friends who had booked out all of the same local venues…!!!

#3 reason to have a destination wedding: They are pretty much stress – free. Most resorts have event staff on hand ready and willing to help you plan your perfect destination wedding. You will have a team of people to help you pull it all off with you only having to send a few emails and make a few calls once you have picked a destination.

#4 reason to have a destination wedding: Destination weddings can be cheaper. You will save money by having your destination wedding at a resort with an event planner, decorations and food included. Not to mention that there will be photo ops EVERYWHERE, saving you on expensive photography fees! There are some great deals out there.

#5 reason to have a destination wedding: A destination wedding is a unique opportunity for both sides of the whole family to come together to explore together, to celebrate together and to laugh together. Getting married at a resort puts you on relaxed, vacation time! You get to slow down and enjoy each other and this new union allowing an irreplaceable family bond to grow – all at your wedding!

And this is the short list! I could go on! But I bet your interest is piqued so let’s talk for a second on how to figure out where to go.

Where to Have Your Destination Wedding

Once you make the decision to have a destination wedding, choosing a place can be tough!

After all there are so many amazing places to go. Here are a few tips to help you figure out where to go.

Plan a romantic dinner with your fiancé. Talk about it while you eat. At the end of the meal, each of you take a pen and paper and make a list of your top 5 places you want to get married in without showing the other.

Once you are done compare the lists. If you have one place that is on both your lists – than that is it! If you have two places on both of your lists why not leave it up to fate? Flip a coin and agree that whatever the outcome, you will be happy!

If you both have completely different lists, head home and try to convince each other whose idea is best! 😉

Or agree that none of the places on either list is right. Why not leave it up to fate? Lay out a map of the zone you are comfortable traveling to, put on a blindfold, spin around and land your finger on a spot…

No matter where you decide, I think having a destination wedding is an impressive option for saying ‘I do’ in blissful style!

What are your great reasons for having a destination wedding?
