Day 18 About Malibu – Pepperdine University

Malibu is home to Pepperdine University – a ‘Christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence’. The university was founded in September of 1937 by George Pepperdine and was originally located in LA. Thanks to Mr. Pepperdine’s generous donations tuition was $420 that year to live on-campus!! Kids were allowed to commute and would be charged $135 for the year of classes. Lunch in their cafeteria of a hamburger and soft drink cost 20 cents ($.20), and a breakfast of eggs, hotcakes, and coffee, 30 cents ($.30) – according to the history on their website.

Because of the incredible Christian Education at such an affordable price, the university grew and by the mid 60’s were in need of a new campus. Merritt H. Adamson, Sylvia Rindge Adamson Neville, and Rhoda-May Adamson Dallas came to the rescue and donated 138 acres of undeveloped ranch land in Malibu in October of 1968.

Today Pepperdine University has a prestigious reputation and is an integral part of the Malibu community. The Lisa Smith Wengler Center For The Arts Pepperdine is home to some amazing performances from both students and professional artists alike. The Frederick R. Weisman Museum Of Art is also located here and always has fascinating displays.

I also found out they do family summer camps here. Check it out here, this may be a fun, affordable way for your family to come get a true taste of Malibu!

No matter where you stay, Pepperdine University is worth a visit!
