Day 8 About Malibu – Solstice Canyon State Park

Today we head away from the beach and into Solstice Canyon in Malibu, a park rich with history. It is the home to one of our only year round waterfalls (or watersprinkle as the locals lovingly refer to it!!) as well as 2 historic homesteads.

Historically, the Chumash used this land for food, water and shelter. In the mid 1860’s Mathew Keller built a stone cottage here (pictured above) which is still standing today and is said to be the oldest existing Malibu stones.

100 years later, in the early 1950’s, Fred and Florence Roberts hired renowned African-American architect Paul Williams to design a unique home for them. They proceeded to design and build a home that was nationally recognized for skillfully blending nature with modern conveniences. Unfortunately it was destroyed in a fire in the late 80’s. However, you can still see the buildings foundation and get a good feel for what it would have been like.

An interesting #Malibu fun fact – Solstice Canyon was chosen to test satellite equipment for space missions, including the Pioneer 12, from 1961-1973. They chose this spot due to the lack of man-made or natural disturbances and it is one of only 3 places in the world chosen for such tests.

This is a moderate to easy hike that should take you about 3 hours to complete. This hike is good for people of all ages. It is a pet-friendly trail so it is one of the more popular trails. Parking is free, but it does fill up quickly!
