Malibu Beach Etiquette

Malibu is home to some of the most amazing beaches in the world. We have sections of sandy beach with crystal clear water, high surf sections, tidal pools and lots of wildlife to observe – there is something for everybody.

Here are 9 easy tips to make your Malibu Beach Day awesome and confrontation free. They are also good things to be aware of when visiting any beach!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #1:

Be Aware of Others! As you are excitedly setting up your beach spot, be sure to look around you first. If at all possible maintain a 20 foot distance from those that were there first. Be sure that you will not be blocking someone’s view before setting up your tent. There is plenty of beach here for everyone so please be respectful and do not sit on top of or in front of others!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #2:

Kindness Counts! Share a smile, explore & share your findings, be understanding of kids – they are just learning! If you bring beach toys, expect for some child to come check them out at some point in time!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #3:

Take off your flip-flops as soon as you get close to someone! I love flip-flops, but they kick up a lot of sand behind us. When you are walking next to someone in the sand, you are spraying them with it! So please just be aware and remove your flops before flipping sand on someone!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #4:

Keep the noise down! It gets breezy here and sound travels so very easily. There is no need to blast your music, scream loudly at your children or have a conversation at the top of your voice. If you need to take a call or have a private conversation, be sure to stand away from those sitting around you. Have fun and enjoy your company, but do it in regular tones!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #5:

Pick a good spot to play your games in. Playing any type of ball or Frisbee over people’s heads is really rude and no one likes it. If your kids are doing it, please tell them to find a spot where there is no one sitting to play in and explain why!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #6:

Don’t feed or touch the wildlife. If you feed one seagull you will quickly have a swarm of them. If you insist on feeding them, make sure you are far, far away from anyone’s beach spot! Also, we have a lot of sea lions that come up on the beach to sun themselves. This is completely normal, however they can carry a lot of disease so be sure never to touch them and to respect their space – they will bite. Take a picture, but please leave them be – it is best to maintain at least a 20 foot distance. It is a great reminder that we do share the beach and this world!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #7:

Don’t smoke! Yuck! But if you insist, please find a place that is downwind and far away from everyone else!

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #8:

Don’t forget the trash bag! Please remember to bring a garbage bag with you, do not leave it on the beach. Observe and follow the carry in, carry out rule.

Malibu Beach Etiquette Tip #9:

Respect others. This means dress properly, don’t let your children run around naked – there will always be older kids who don’t need to see that yet, be kind to your neighbors, don’t take pictures of anyone without their permission, be thoughtful. Read and follow all posted beach rules.

  1. I love this! It makes me so happy to hear you talking about the lost art of manners and thinking about others. It’s not just another article on how to make the most of your experience while ignoring all those around you. Thank you for advocating patience, understanding and good stewardship of the beaches and environment. Bravo!
