8 Tips To Survive The Summer With Kids & Trauma

survive-the-summer

Surviving the summer with your kids while healing from heartbreak, unhealed trauma or new trauma can feel overwhelming, like you are breathing through a straw. But the bright side is that it’s also an opportunity for growth and connection.

It took me a minute to shift my perspective there, but it’s true. Believe me, I’ve had my moments where I didn’t think I could carry on, the pain was so tremendous and strong. Yet the lights of life, my kids, needed me, wanted me. It is bittersweet. And through my pain and perseverance, I have created some strategies so when those hard days hit, I’m prepared to survive the summer.

Here are my 8 strategies to navigate this challenging time and survive the summer:

  1. Establish a Routine

Creating a daily routine can provide stability for both you and your kids. Schedule regular activities—like morning walks, art projects, or game nights. This structure not only keeps everyone engaged but also helps you feel a sense of accomplishment as you survive the summer.

  1. Embrace Outdoor Activities

Summer is perfect for outdoor fun. Plan trips to the park, beach, or local nature trails. Fresh air and sunshine can boost your mood and provide a much-needed break from indoor stress. Involve your kids in planning these outings; their excitement can lift your spirits.

  1. Engage in Creative Projects

Channel your emotions into creative outlets. Consider art, writing – journaling, or DIY projects. Involving your kids in these activities can help distract from heartache while fostering bonding. Create a family scrapbook or garden together—both can serve as a therapeutic escape.

  1. Prioritize Self-Care

Amidst the chaos of parenting, don’t forget to care for yourself. Even small moments of self-care, like reading a book or taking a relaxing bath after the kids are in bed, can help recharge your emotional batteries. When you feel better, you’re more present for your children.

  1. Open Up to Your Kids

Depending on their age, consider sharing your feelings with your children. Honesty can be a powerful tool; explaining that you’re going through a tough time can help them understand your mood shifts. Kids often appreciate knowing they’re not alone in navigating emotions. They learn from us, so let’s show them some healthy ways of getting though the storm.

  1. Seek Support

Don’t hesitate to lean on friends or family. Arrange playdates or outings with other parents, which can provide a welcome distraction as you survive the summer. You might also consider support groups or therapy to help process your feelings.

  1. Focus on Mindfulness

Practice mindfulness techniques to stay grounded. Activities like yoga, meditation, or simply taking deep breaths can help manage stress and anxiety. Involve your kids in these practices—turning it into a fun family activity can reinforce the importance of emotional health.

  1. Create New Traditions

Use this summer as a chance to create new family traditions. Whether it’s weekly movie nights, themed dinners, or exploring new hobbies, these rituals can foster joy and provide a sense of continuity.

Healing takes time, but with these strategies, you can navigate and survive the summer while nurturing both your heart and your family. Focus on moments of joy, connection, and growth—these will help you move forward, just as they did my family.
