cleaning your travel toiletry bag

With summer right around the corner, and all of those exciting travel dates getting closer, spring is the perfect time to get your travel gear out and cleaned up.

I’m guessing you just gave a look of confusion! Clean our travel gear? Great, another thing to clean…

It’s actually not as bad as it sounds, and in fact, is totally necessary. Remember when you set your carry-on down in the bathroom at the airport, then came home and threw it on your couch…?

Ok, ok, let’s not go there!

Instead, here are a few simple solutions to cleaning your travel gear.

First, get out your suitcases, empty all pockets and areas, dump out any bits that have gathered in there and wipe down with an antibacterial wipe. Let dry/air out in full sun for 60 minutes.

Then toss in either a bamboo charcoal bag or a dryer sheet for freshness (dryer sheets will also keep small animals away – fyi!) and put it away, fresh and ready for your next family trip!

Repeat for your carry-on bags, laptop bags and/or equipment bags.

Your travel toiletry bag will take a bit more time, but you only have to do it once a year to enjoy less stress during the packing process for each family trip. Check out what I keep in our travel toiletries bag (it is downloadable & printable) – Family Travel Toiletry Bag Packing List. Here are some easy ways to clean your travel toiletry bag.

5 Tips to Make Cleaning Your Travel Toiletry Bag Easy

Make sure you have the best travel toiletry bag available for you. There are lots of different options out there, so take a few minutes to review them and see if there is one that would suit your needs better. Having a fully stocked travel toiletry bag is one of my secrets to happy packing, and having the right travel gear makes this possible!

Empty everything out from all pockets and mesh sections of your travel toiletry bag. Take outside and dump it to get any held up little bits out. Wipe with an antibacterial wipe and leave in the direct sun for 60 minutes to air it out.

Check the dates on all liquids, pills and creams. I do this once a year, it takes a few minutes and then is done. I toss anything expired and make a list of what needs replacing. I will replace them the next time I head to the pharmacy.

Using an antibacterial wipe, wipe down the travel bottles and products that are not expired. Let air dry on your counter top for 60 minutes.

Refill any shampoos, conditioners or lotions as needed. Restock your travel toiletry bag the next time you head to the pharmacy and get everything put back into your travel toiletry bag and stored for your next family trip.

Done! Now your travel gear is nice and clean and ready for adventure!

Many studies show that the cleaner you keep your things and your surroundings, the more productive and happier you are. It is important to be conscious of maintaining a healthy level of clean. Keeping your travel gear clean is no exception – you will get more use out of it if taken care of and choosing to travel will make you happy!! 😉

Safe Travels!

  1. Good reminder to clean the toiletry bag! I usually wipe out with a tissue 30 seconds before I need to pack it and head out the door.
