Being grateful is a fantastic way to live a positive, happy life.

I know because I live this way.

But it is more than just being grateful for what we have that makes this a lifestyle.

Show gratitude by learning about your ancestors. I can’t take credit for this idea. The week before Thanksgiving, my son brought home an ancestor report project from school in which he had to interview a family member on our ancestors. We were having my parents and hubby’s mom in for the holiday so I thought it would be fun to interview them all on Thanksgiving Day as a family activity. It turned out to be a fascinating project, and we all learned quite a bit about where we had come from. We took some time to be thankful for those who came before us and have helped pave the way for the life we enjoy today. Throughout the holiday season we keep them in our thoughts and show them gratitude by honoring them in living well.

Show gratitude by giving, on any level you can. Lending a hand to your elderly neighbor, helping a pregnant woman with her bags, giving a few bucks and some food to the homeless person on the corner, serving at your local soup kitchen or for meals on wheels or being an angel and paying someone’s layaway… there are so many ways to give. Choose one that your family is comfortable with and give together!

Show gratitude by hearing. Don’t just listen, really hear those around you. We always do our best to understand why someone is saying what they are saying instead of being instantly reactional. At mealtimes and when we are in conversation I put my phone down and give each person my full, undivided attention. This is the single best way to send the message that you are grateful for someone.

Show gratitude by accepting each other. Enough with trying to change and control every person around you! We focus on the things that we appreciate about each other, the things that each of us uniquely do well. There is no greater gift to your mate or child than to accept them for who they are and then to help them shine.

Show gratitude with your actions. Fully walk the talk. If you are feeling grateful then express it! Smile at a stranger, give a compliment to a friend or coworker, buy the person in line behind your their cup of coffee, randomly tell your child why you love them, share how grateful you are for everything you have with your mate… there are so many ways!

What are the ways in which your family is showing gratitude this holiday season?

  1. Very sweet! Honestly I think most people really want someone else to listen to them and understand what they are saying. We are all so busy now, it’s too easy to forget to sit down and have real conversations rather than half listening while on your phone or watching TV. thanks!

  2. I couldn’t agree more. We try to teach our child gratitude by having him pick out some toys etc to donate to local charities and learn that not everyone is as lucky as we are.
